Hello Joy Friends,
Chrissy here 🙂 we wanted to let you know about some of our amazing dams here in South East Queensland, as who doesn’t love messing about in the water.
On the weekends we love to get out and about in this beautiful country of ours. We often trundle off to a local dam pop the boat in, throw the kids or ourselves on a tube, or slide on a pair of skiis and burn about like lunatics for the day. Its fun for the whole family. Now I truly believe whether you have a blow up boat, a dingy, a fancy speed boat or just a picnic rug heading off to one of the locals dams is a lovely day trip. Its such a great way to get the whole family outside for the day
One of our favourites is Lake Moogerah, which is just east of Aratula on the Brisbane to Warwick road. Lake Moogerah offers camping, fishing, waterskiing or sailing. Kyacks and fishing tinnies are available to hire. There are a lot of accommodation options including private holiday houses overlooking the lake and offering gorgeous views of the scenic rim. We stayed in Moogerah Lakehouse No1 for a long weekend and it was amazing. Airconditioned, clean and well fitted out with everything you could possibly need for a wonderful time. It also comes with a fishing dingy.
We also head off to Atkinsons Dam, which is 1 hour west of Brisbane. Its an easy drive through lovely countryside to a dam that is not too big with an easy boat ramp for unloading the boat. Caravan park and camping is also available. This dam is mainly used for power boats and jet skis.
Wivenhoe Dam is only 45 minutes from Brisbane and is mainly for non-powered boats although they have lifted the restriction to very low powered boats with a limit of 6 knots. There is a beautiful cafe at Cormorant Bay overlooking the dam, please follow the link to their facebook page to see opening times. I have had a beautiful breakfast there to celebrate a birthday with friends and we all enjoyed the selection. The view is amazing.
Sarah here 🙂
So like many of us Poms we were totally new to this whole boating thing when we arrived, but we’ve tried really hard to get into the swing of things 😉 and seem to have managed to adjust quite well ! We love Somerset dam which is approx 1hr 15mins out from us here in the Western suburbs. Its one of the bigger dams that you can take your boat or jet ski out onto. this is one of the few dams you actually need a permit for, but this can be very easily obtained over from Seqwater , at a cost $15 weekly or $100 yearly just call this number (07) 5427 8100.
There are several areas all around the dam such as campgrounds and holiday parks , so you can either just pack up a picnic and go for the day or stay a little longer and enjoy the stunning scenery around there. It truly is one of our favourite ways to spend a day !
We often will pack a little camp stove and grab some bacon and eggs to cook when we’re there and yep you now it! the kettle comes too 😉 can’t miss out on a cuppa even when its mid 30c’s and the sun is burning down !! We do take our gazebo as well and some camping chairs and make sure we take plenty of water and loads of food as amazing how hungry peeps get when they are swimming and tubing all day.
So whether you have a boat or not, get out into some of this amazing Australian bush, and have an adventure exploring some of our gorgeous dams and lakes.
