A Weekend in the paradise of The WhitSundays ahhhh ..

Ok so when you move to Brisbane in the beautiful Queensland suddenly all these amazing destinations are within reach and we have some of the most amazing places you could ever wish to go to, right here on our own doorstop !

And as we all know a holiday is good for the soul even if it’s only for a few days as these guys over at Positive Health sum up so well

For me the Whitsundays Islands have been on my bucket list to revisit,  since I went there 20 yrs ago as a back packer ( yep that was me smelly clothes , purple backpack, bleach blonde hair and big happy grin 🙂 ) . I left then hoping and praying to be able to return one day, with a wonderful family that were only a twinkle in my mind’s eye back then.

So when we actually moved here to live and we were looking for a long weekend destination I knew exactly where we were headed ! Planning our trip I hopped on Expedia and Wotif  looking for the best deal, also check out tourism whitsundays which has some great deals , and we found an awesome one at the OutRigger Airlie beach ( we got the best rate on Expedia in the end ).  A 2 bedrooms apartment which was perfect for the 4 of us, and was a stunning place to stay right on the marina and walking distance into town.

The islands will take your breath away with their beauty !

Recently the beautiful Whitsundays went through the awful cyclone Debbie which saw terrible destruction and for now Daydream Island is closed to all visitors and Hayman Island will need to go through extensive renovations but will be back better than ever next year 2018.

But you can stay on the stunning  Hamilton island which has loads of amazing accommodation options for you to chose from, as well as Airbnb offering a great selection of homes and apartments to rent from, with the added advantage of flying directly to it.

The Whitsunday Ferry which goes between all the islands is a great way to get around but you will need to factor the cost into your budget as it can get to be quite pricey and also take a look at the timetable before you leave.

We took this ferry over to Hamilton island for one of our days, and wow what a way to travel WOW these islands are just stunning !! there is no other way to describe them just amazing !!! and that was just the ferry ride . The water is crystal clear as you glide over it and you may even be fortunate enough to spot some dolphins

Hamilton island for the day was perfect , no cars allowed just golf carts so we took our towels and our picnic and hopped onto the free golf carts that drive around the island offering free rides around the island. You do have the options to rent your own if you like which would give you a lot of freedom to explore the whole island . There are a couple of apartment blocks on the island, but you definitely feel as if you are away from the rest of the world on a tropical paradise .

We spent a very happy few hrs sitting on the beach and swimming in those crystal clear waters before heading back to the harbour to catch the 5pm ferry home.  While we waited we of course had to have fish and chips 🙂 which tasted just divine! and finished with some very yummy ice cream from the ice cream parlour in the marina,  as we sat there watching the sun start to set, looking out across the marina and then onto the amazingly blue waters, which were changing shades of blue right before our eyes , yep that was a true “pinch me I must be dreaming” moment !

We spent another one of our precious holiday days on a tall ship !! The Derwent Hunter

oh yeah now this is the way to spend a day ! and if you are able to do, one amazing thing, while you are there then this I would truly recommend ! We set the alarm early and headed down to the marina in Airlie beach to board this incredible ship, and headed out to some of the little coves and sand bars to do some snorkelling. Now this is what we all think of when we think of Australia ( or maybe its just me ) its snorkelling in crystal clear blue waters on the Great Barrier Reef and this was it .

Now if you are true adventures and fancy chartering a boat for yourselves for a week or so then you can do that too, even if you have no experience !!!! ( I know awesome and scary all in the same breath!! ) one of the awesome companies doing this is Cumberland Charter Yachts  these guys will set you up and give you all the instruction you need and even send you off with a route to follow. Everyone who has ever done this has only got amazing things to say about it and I’ve added it to my bucket list of adventures.

As I’ve mentioned before, me and the ocean can end up in not a very pretty sight, so once again those ginger tablets didn’t leave my side as there is too much to see in this amazing place that requires being on a boat !! . It took us about 2 hours of sailing to reach our 1st stopping point ,but the sailing in itself is amazing , gliding across the water in this beautiful old lady hearing the creak of the sails just wow !

Now if you do get the opportunity to do some snorkelling and are offered a stinger suit wear it !!! you may look crazy but it is pretty much always stinger season and you don’t want to have this amazing holiday ruined ! We spent some very special hours swimming and snorkelling amongst the most breath taking fish and reef, with colours that will just blow your mind !!

This trip was every bit as amazing as I dreamt it would be, and just an hours plane ride up from Brisbane 🙂 . We have only begun to scrap the surface of these amazing islands and I know there is more to discover and I can’t wait to go back .

So take my advice if you get the opportunity grab it with both hands and discover a little bit of paradise just up the road from us
